Akhir Kab Tak?

आख़िर कब तक?

No More Satya Niketan

They were digging under our feet. On 6 September a five storey PG collapsed in Satya Niketan with students inside, and a basement was reportedly being carved out beneath them. This site is for them, and for every student sleeping in a building nobody checked.

Section 01 · The spine

Eight things.
Not negotiable.

आठ मांगें। कोई समझौता नहीं।

Every demand has a name attached, a definition of done, and a status we will change in public when it moves. Nothing here is a slogan.

01Demanded

Fix responsibility for the collapse

A public report naming who sanctioned or ignored the basement excavation, and exactly which building code sections were violated.

02Demanded

MCD accepts the inspection failure

MCD says out loud that inspection failed, commits to time bound reform, and presents it to students at a public hearing. Not a press note. A room with students in it.

MCDMayor of Delhi
03Demanded

Audit every student PG in Delhi

A 30 day structural and fire safety audit across Satya Niketan, Mukherjee Nagar, Old Rajinder Nagar, Kamla Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Munirka and Kingsway Camp. Results published as a register anyone can search.

04Demanded

Relocate the affected students somewhere safe

Safe accommodation, at no cost to the student, for residents of the collapsed building and any adjacent building evacuated or declared unsafe, for as long as it takes to rehouse them properly. Plus fee relief and consideration on exams. This week, not next term.

05Demanded

Pay the hospital bills. Pay the families.

Every rupee of treatment, surgery and rehabilitation for the injured paid by the state, with no family asked for a deposit at a hospital counter. A compensation figure announced in public for the families of the dead and for anyone left permanently injured, paid inside 30 days and not left to a court. The money recovered afterwards from the owner and the contractor, not quietly written off against the public exchequer.

Build hostels. Plan for students.

A published hostel expansion plan with real numbers and real dates, sized against how many students the university actually admits. Every seat that does not exist is a room a PG owner gets to rent.

07Demanded

FIR and an independent investigation

An FIR under culpable homicide and the relevant building code sections against the owner, the contractor and any official who sanctioned or ignored the work. A magisterial inquiry with a public report inside 60 days.

Pass a PG Regulation Act

Delhi has no law that treats a paying guest house as what it is, which is student housing. Put one on the statute book: a licence every PG must hold, a cap on people per floor, a second exit that is not optional, annual structural and fire certification, a written agreement every tenant keeps a copy of, and a regulator a student can complain to and get an answer from. A circular can be withdrawn quietly. An Act has to be repealed in public.

Check your PG

Ten questions. Two minutes. This one works right now and runs entirely on your phone, so nothing you tap here leaves this page. Do it tonight, before you go to sleep in that building.

Red or amber? Send the result to your PG group and to your parents tonight.

Section 03 · Right now

If you need help tonight

If you were in that building, or near it, or you just cannot stop thinking about it, talk to someone. That is not weakness. That is Sunday.
